Refurbished laptops are no obstacle for modern device management environments – as long as you work with a supplier who understands the importance of consistency, compatibility and control within an SME.

SMEs today use a variety of management solutions, from Intune and Workspace ONE to traditional Active Directory structures. Refurbished devices can be perfectly integrated into these systems, but it’s important to maintain control over BIOS settings, TPM, OS versions and network access. A good supplier will provide you with the necessary information and support.

Are refurbished laptops compatible with Intune, Workspace ONE or other MDM solutions?

Yes, provided they have a valid Windows license, TPM 2.0 and full admin access, refurbished laptops can be easily added to your MDM environment.

Modern management tools detect devices via serial number, TPM and hardware ID. Refurbished laptops from the professional segment (e.g. HP EliteBook, Dell Latitude) come with these chips as standard. Requirements include a clean Windows installation, no OEM locks and full BIOS access. Ask your supplier if the devices are ready for automatic enrollment and policy deployment.

Do I need to adjust our existing Windows image?

Not necessarily, as long as you use uniform models and maintain control over BIOS and boot settings.

If you deploy your own Windows image using tools like MDT or SCCM, model consistency is an advantage. Make sure to order multiple units of the exact same model to avoid driver conflicts and variations. Explicitly request devices without preloaded bloatware and with a legacy boot or UEFI setup that fits your infrastructure.

Are there risks of BIOS or firmware locks?

No, not if you work with a professional refurbisher who fully unlocks the devices in advance.

BIOS or firmware locks can occasionally occur on devices previously managed by large organizations. A good refurbisher will fully remove these, giving you complete access to BIOS settings, secure boot and boot order. When in doubt, ask for written confirmation of an unlocked BIOS with admin rights.

Can refurbished devices follow group policies and endpoint security?

Yes, refurbished laptops can be joined to your domain and subjected to GPOs and security policies just like new ones.

As long as you have a valid license and a clean OS, there's no difference in behaviour between refurbished and new devices. You can add them to your Active Directory, manage them via Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and include them in your existing antivirus and firewall systems.

What if I purchase devices in phases?

Choose a supplier who can provide the same model range over time.

IT environments require consistency. When ordering in phases, you want to avoid ending up with different BIOS versions or driver sets. Some suppliers stock batches for B2B clients or alert you when models are about to go end-of-life. That way, you can plan your rollout and keep integration manageable.

What should I ask the supplier before purchasing?

Always request the following:

  • A detailed list of hardware specs (including TPM and chipset)
  • BIOS access with no password protection
  • A valid Windows license
  • Confirmation of compatibility with your MDM or deployment environment
  • An option for batch orders or repeat purchases of identical models

Avoid suppliers who give vague answers or refuse to provide documentation.
